The Migration Research Association (GAR), in collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), organised a two-day international workshop titled “Anti-Immigrant Sentiment: From Rhetoric to International Mechanisms of Advocacy”, held at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Turkey Office on 19–20 September 2024. The workshop opened with welcoming remarks by Prof. Dr. Deniz Sert, President of GAR, and Dr. Ayşem Biriz Karaçay on behalf of GAR, alongside Tina Blohm, Country Representative of FES Turkey.
Each session featured two country case studies, covering Bulgaria, France, Netherlands, Greece, Egypt, Lebanon, and Turkey. Participants examined the evolution of anti-immigrant sentiment in their respective countries over the past decade, discussed the strategies employed to counter discrimination, reflected on the challenges encountered, and shared their perspectives on future trends.
In the final session, participants exchanged views on possible avenues for future collaboration and formulated policy recommendations. They also put forward proposals for developing more effective strategies to combat discrimination against immigrants. At GAR, we believe that the rich discussions and the spirit of cooperation fostered during the workshop will continue to grow in the period ahead.
