Migration has been an important issue since the emergence of nation-states and their borders. However, recently, with the technological developments in transportation and communication channels as well as the wars, conflicts and economic and ecological problems, migration has started affecting more lives than ever. Parallel to that has been the increase in the scholarly interest in migration. Nevertheless, gender both as a subject and as an analytical category is a relatively new topic in migration studies.
On June 20-21, 2018, we organized an international conference titled “Integration and Social Cohesion: Merging best practices with theoretical implications.” Following Prof. Adrian Favell, the keynote speaker, our members Dr. Doğuş Şimşek, Dr. Gülay U. Göksel, Dr. K. Onur Unutulmaz and Dr. Neva Övünç gave presentations on integration and social cohesion from various disciplinary perspectives. Local, national and international NGOs and organizations’ representatives attended the conference on the second day. The conference was held in Salt Galata with the support of IFEA (French Institute of Anatolian Studies) and IPLI Foundation.
We, GAR, organized a workshop titled “The Other Side of Migration: Afghan Migrants” on February 8, 2018, in Salt Galata, İstanbul. Among the workshop participants were graduate students who work on Afghan migrants and refugees as well as scholars and civil society representatives. The aim of the workshop was to provide a platform through which junior scholars come together, exchange ideas and develop future collaborations.
