EU-Turkey Statement: A Legal Analysis in the Third Year by Neva Övünç Öztürk and Cavidan Soykan

March 18, 2019

March 2019 marks the third year of the EU-Turkey statement. In the last three years, the debates mainly focused on three headings: the possibility that the statement can prevent asylum seekers’ access to protection; that it might cause deportations; and, especially, that Turkey is not a safe third country. It seems that in this three-year period which started on March 18, 2016, legal uncertainty is continuing.

Hundreds of migrants go missing each year on the Atlantic route, leaving families desperate for answers.

In Senegal, some spiritual leaders are exploiting that uncertainty, falsely claiming to have information about the missing, an investigation found.
