Researcher (70%)
GAR – Association for Migration Research is looking for a researcher (70%) to work within the framework of a comparative research project conducted at the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project is entitled “Digital empowerment: unpacking ICTs-mediated practices of asylum seekers in Turkey and refugees in Switzerland to cope with (im)mobility conditions”. Its main aim is to examine the use of digital technology by sub-Saharan African asylum seekers in Turkey and refugees from the same region living in Switzerland (for further information please click here).
Mission:
– Literature review on the use of digital technology by migrants in Turkey;
– Fieldwork: which consist of ethnography in Istanbul and Izmir among sub-Saharan African asylum seekers, conducting semi-structured interviews, collection online data and organizing focus groups;
– Co-organisation of a workshop on the use of technology by migrants in Istanbul;
– Possibly to co-write scientific reports and conference papers in English.
Requirements:
– Master’s degree in social sciences, preferably sociology, social anthropology or migration studies
– Ongoing PhD in social sciences (preferably in qualitative sociology) dealing
with migration and refugee issues, or PhD degree received no later than two years ago (date of viva voce) on the same issues;
– Extensive knowledge of migration and refugee studies (knowledge on digital migration studies would be an asset);
– Excellent knowledge of qualitative research methods (in particular semi-structured interviews and ethnography);
– Qualitative fieldwork experience with migrants;
– Fluency in English is a necessary condition (good knowledge of French
would be an asset).
The position is based in Istanbul. The successful applicant must be able to travel, especially to Izmir, and stay in this town about 3 months for conducting fieldwork.
Benefits:
The salary conditions are based on the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) young post-doctoral researcher scholarship. Travel and fieldwork expenses will be covered by the research project.
Starting date: 1 October 2020.
Duration: 12 months.
Weekly working time: 28 hours.
