Understanding Anti-Immigration Dynamics: Insights from Europe and the MENA Region

The Association for Migration Research (GAR), in collaboration with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Turkey Office, is pleased to announce the release of its latest report: “Understanding Anti-Immigration Dynamics: Insights from Europe and the MENA Region”.

This comprehensive report stems from the workshop held in Istanbul on September 19-20, 2024, which brought together academics, researchers, and civil society representatives to address the global rise of anti-immigrant sentiment. Focusing on both European and MENA countries, the report highlights the key drivers of anti-immigration narratives and offers actionable recommendations for addressing these pressing challenges.

Key Themes of the Report

  • The Rise of Anti-Immigration Sentiment: Analyzing how misinformation, political rhetoric, and structural inequalities fuel negative perceptions toward migrants.
  • Role of Political Actors: Examining how migrants are framed as scapegoats for economic and social issues to consolidate political support.
  • Emotional and Structural Drivers: Highlighting the role of fear, anxiety, and resource competition in shaping societal attitudes.
  • Media Influence: Understanding how traditional and digital media amplify anti-immigrant rhetoric and the potential for responsible journalism to reshape public narratives.
  • Country-Specific Dynamics: Insights into the challenges faced in France, the Netherlands, Greece, Bulgaria, Egypt, Lebanon, and Turkey.
  • Civil Society and Academia: Exploring the indispensable roles of NGOs and researchers in fostering inclusive policies and countering misinformation.

Key Recommendations

The report provides a roadmap for tackling anti-immigrant sentiment, including:

  • Strengthening legal protections and addressing systemic discrimination.
  • Enhancing the role of civil society organizations and academia in countering misinformation.
  • Promoting community solidarity and dialogue between migrants and host communities.
  • Collaborating with media platforms to challenge stereotypes and amplify migrant voices.
