Dr. Deniz Coşan Eke is an interdisciplinary researcher with academic training in sociology, international relations, social and cultural anthropology, and theology. Since 2011, her research has focused on Alevi communities in Turkey and Europe, examining transnationalism, identity, religious authority, migration, and collective emotions. She received her PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology from LMU Munich in 2019, following graduate studies at METU and Ankara University. Between 2020 and 2025, she was a Postdoctoral and later Senior Research Fellow in Alevi Theological Studies at the University of Vienna, and co-led the Gender and Age Working Group within the EU COST Action Migration and Religious Diversity (2021–2025); she was also a visiting researcher at the University of Westminster, London (2022) and the University of Cambridge (2023). Drawing on oral history, audiovisual ethnography, participatory mapping, and intersectional approaches, she has published extensively on Alevism, transnationalism, migration, collective emotions, and the gendered transformation of religion in peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and monographs. Since 2026, she has been a founding member and editor of The Journal of Alevi Studies (JAS), published by Hamburg University Press.
