TO THE ATTENTION OF THE PUBLIC

WE INVITE EVERYONE TO DEFEND LIVING TOGETHER AN EQUAL AND HUMANE LIFE

On November 16, 2021, three Syrian workers, 23-year-old Mamoun al-Nabhan, 21-year-old Ahmed El-Ali and 17-year-old Muhammed El-Bish, were murdered by pouring gasoline on them while they were sleeping in the Güzelbahçe district of Izmir. The person who murdered three Syrians, who were staying in a shed belonging to the construction site they were working in, claimed that he was carrying out a "clean-up operation". The murder was hidden from the public for a month. At the moment, allegations are emerging that the suspect is "mentally unstable". All these raise suspicions that this brutal murder has been blacked out.

We demand that this incident, in which 3 Syrian workers lost their lives, be clarified in all its aspects, and shared with the public. This murder is the result of increasing racism and anti-immigration sentiments in the country. Similar incidents that took place recently in Ankara Altındağ and İzmir Torbalı clearly reveal this racist and anti-immigrant hatred. All expressions and actions that fuel this hatred cause an increase in attacks against immigrants.

Immigrants, who are the cheapest workers in the country, forced to work in informal sector under deadly conditions, are not the cause of impoverishment, insecurity, and deteriorating living conditions in Turkey. Those responsible are the politicians who make these policies and statements. Both the current government's immigration policies that instrumentalize refugees and the anti-immigrant rhetoric and actions of opposition parties fuel this atmosphere of hatred. Reminder: Immigrants are not the cause and addressee of the economic problems and poverty in Turkey.

We invite all non-governmental organizations, political party representatives, and media institutions to follow the legal process. We remind the authorities, relevant ministries, and bureaucrats, who are obliged to provide an open, transparent, and traceable investigation and trial process of their responsibilities. In order to stop this trend and prevent similar massacres, crimes, and violations of human rights, we, once again, invite everyone, especially politicians and decision makers, to stand in solidarity and to fight for a life together against hatred.
